Bio
João Cardoso (Cardoz), is a young Portuguese artist born in 1995. In 2014, he began his bachelor's in Illustration
at “the CASS” (London Metropolitan University), having been awarded, at the end of the degree, the “Sir John Cass school of Art Design Award 2017” for best course portfolio.
During his formative years, his participation in the “The Art of Ping Pong 2015” exhibition must be highlighted, a project where proceeds reverted in favor of the “BBC Children in Need” charitable institution. As he carried out his bachelor's degree, João Cardoso began his career as an artist within the walls of the “Accor Hotels” chain. In 2018 and 2019 the artist was invited to paint two separate boat casks for “Rom Boats”, pieces that were exhibited at the Cordoaria Nacional in Lisbon, at the feira ARCO 2018 and 2019. In June 2018, the artist returned to Lisbon where he opened his own studio in partnership with Narso, where they cooperate with other independent artists.
Since April 2019, the artist has been represented by CARRASCO art gallery and together they presented projects such as “CRIATURAS” and “WHY STANDING STILL” in Lisbon, and “STRICTLY LOOSE” and “CINCO” at the new gallery space in Madrid. Recently the artist has also been part of “VOLTA Art Fair”, Basel 2021 and ”Feria ESTAMPA”, Madrid 2021and 2022 also in partnership with CARRASCO art gallery. Alongside his shows with the gallery, the artist has also performed independently organized shows such as “UNLOVE” and “PLAYING w/ STUPIDITY”, his biggest show to date which had been displayed bothin Lisbon and Oporto, as well as “FIELD TRIP” , a collaborative exhibition held at his new studio in Lisbon.
In 2022 he was invited to be part of the Art Residency “ARTURb” in Lagos, a residency that took place at the old town prison and where artist where invited not only to produce a colaborative show inside it but also an outdoor mural. In November , a long awaited invitation ( postponed because of COVID-19 ) for his first Museum show at MUSA - Sintra Museum of Arts with the most recent body of work titled “PAPER TOSS”. Since the beginning, the artist has been involved in some collaborative exhibitions but he also participated in projects ranging from muralism and illustration to teaching and fashion, as well as a long term relationship with MOCHE, with whom he worked as an art curator. The artist has also been working with other partners such as EDP, MARS, FUJITSU and BMW. The artist also worked as an Illustrator for FCB, an advertising agency, and taught digital illustration at “THE CASS” Faculty of Art (London Metropolitan University).
